Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are a much-needed part of the hospice philosophy. Whether working in the Advocate Hospice office or spending time with patients, volunteers provide the needed support that ultimately enriches the lives of our patients and their families. If interested, please contact Advocate Hospice at 317-745-5147.

Volunteer Opportunities Include:
  • Direct Care:  Respite/Companionship - Spend time, usually 1 to 2 hours, with the patient to  allow the caregiver a break to attend to other activities. During these visits, volunteers often listen to the patients stories, read to the patient, run errands, or engage in the preferred activity of the patient.
  • Creative Support - Volunteers may make things for patients or decorate their home for the holidays.
  • Administrative/Office Support - Some volunteers prefer to help by supporting the hospice staff. Volunteers help with mailings and other paper work at the Advocate Hospice Office.
  • Bereavement Support - Follow up phone calls and/or visits may be made to survivors who have lost a loved one.
Hospice Training:

All volunteer candidates are first interviewed and reference checked. In order to prepare hospice volunteers, Advocate Hospice offers a Hospice Volunteer Training Program and orientation program.  For those volunteers who wish to work with patients, a commitment of one to two hours a week is preferred.
